Zwei Kommoden (2023)
Found Objects
Zwei Kommoden, which in English would translate as Two Sets of Drawers, consists of two blocks of matchboxes that were glued together to make a storage unit for small electronic parts by an unknown person in the German Democratic Republic (DDR). The Kommoden were subsequently donated to the Heimatmuseum in Dahme (Mark). It seems the museum did not want to accession the objects into their collection as they were left outside with a pile of other rejected materials. We found them and, being impressed by the inventive use of matchboxes as elements for a handmade drawer set, took them into our possession. Several years later we were approached by the Heimatmuseum to participate in an exhibition of local artists. Our contribution to the show was the work Zwei Kommoden, in effect returning to rejected artifacts to the museum that had rejected them, this time with the auric protection of having the status of contemporary art.
