Srdce (2015)
oak heart, altar cloth.
Commissioned by Kunstverein Konstanz for Meeting Point 2015
Jan Hus was an early refromer of the christian church and his theological work in many ways prefigures the Protestant reformation that took place a little over 100 years after his death.
Having been invited to the Council of Constance in 1415 with the promise that he would not be harmed he was nonetheless immediately arrested, imprisoned and subsequently tried and burnt at the stake for heresy. Poking in the remains of his immolated corpse it was discovered that part of his heart had not completely burnt. A new fire was built so that the remains of his heart could be burnt a second time.
The wooden heart in Srdce was CNC-machined from a 14th century roof beam. This timber was sourced from a house on Salmannsweilergasse, Konztanz that was standing in the centre of the town on the day when Jan Hus was paraded past on his way to being murdered.
