Epiphron (2012)
climbing rope, cycling helmet
Epiphron is works from the body of practice that also created Fetish, Goddess, Sacrifice, Priest. In these works contemporary consumer leisure items (climbing ropes and cycling helmets) are used to consider the modernist appropriation of 'African' and "Tribal' cultures in the early 20th century. The ease with which these simple woven and knotted works are able to mimic western aesthetic borrowings from the previous century is in no small part due to the persistence of cultural appropriations within the design approaches of the contemporary leisure industry.
