The title of this work come from William J Nicholls 1898 work "Coal Catechism" where at the end of the preface we read "With Coal, we have light, strength, power, wealth and civilization; without Coal, we have darkenss, weakness, poverty and barbarism. The most civilised nations of the world are those consuming the most Coal."

The text of coal catechism was also used in redacted form to create the libretto for Song for Coal (2015)
