Kunst von Hier

We're delighted to be taking part in the Kunst von Hier exhibition at the Heimatmuseum in Dahme/Mark, Brandenburg.  

 

"Zwei Kommoden" is a work we made especially for the exhibition. The work itself consists of two small chests of drawers that were lovingly assembled from old matchboxes by an unknown hobbyist, presumably in GDR times. The original owner/creator used them to store small electronic parts, diodes and resistors.  They bear witness to the care, attention and creativity typical of the homemade objects produced in East Germany during this period.
 

Their provenence is also interesting, because we found these chests of drawers, along with several others, in a pile of refuse in front of the Heimatmuseum in Dahme. Perhaps they had been donated to the museum and then removed from the collection. Or perhaps they were never part of the collection as they fell outside of the museum's collection strategy. The desire to select two of them, give them a title as a work of art and return them to the museum outside of which we found them, is for us an act of healing and restoration.  A homecoming, of sorts.
