Straw, rocks, weed, marks, folds, sweet water and dirty water. The group show „Tipping the Drop“ presents works by Crowe and Rawlinson, Simon Faithfull, Marta Marcé, and Noemi Y. Molitor that evoke aggregate shifts, matter in transformation, and humble attempts at speaking with nature.
In their collaborative practice, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson turn to organic materials such as waste paper, straw and rainwater, fusing their ingredients into free-standing sculptural works. Sludge turns to pulp turns to recycled energy.
Simon Faithfull who was recently witness to the shifting of tectonic plates during the volcanic eruption on Iceland, connects to the activity of landscape and its constant undergrowth in his work. Submerging his body into a forest swamp, he acts out our symbiotic relationship with water.
The paintings of Marta Marcé are derived from natural printing procedures that invite plants and vegetables to mark the canvas. Leaf imprints and natural dyes merge into the fabric that carries her painted rocks, blobs and mani-fold shapes. As transparency meets opacity, even rock, the mass that is our planet can break and become fluid before the eye.
The lines in Noemi Y. Molitor’s abstract works on paper counteract and come into tension with one another, tipping at paper folds and changing direction where paint and brush strokes mark the ground. Often they find temporary rest at the horizontal plane before they re-enter the image field.
